Letter to the Editor - Organ Donation
As a medical laboratory professional, I've always been an advocate for organ donation. Until I sat with my sister at MUSC, as her husband received a kidney transplant, only then did I see what an incredible miracle and gift organ donation/transplantation is.
My sister asked me to be with her during the surgery. As they waited, their conversation turned to what a change in his life was about to take place. He could cut the grass again, dialysis five times a day would be gone, and he could even do something as simple as go outside when it was hot. The conversation then turned to the donor. Both were in awe that a family would do this for total strangers and were very emotional as they thanked and prayed for the family and especially the donor of life given back to my brother-in-law. Please consider being an organ donor yourself.
If you are the spouse of a person who has signed an organ donation card, please respect those wishes.
God bless the anonymous family and donor. What a generous birthday gift. My brother-in-law's birthday is next week. He is home and doing well.
Thank you from our entire family.
